5 Signs You Have Termites in Your Arizona Home

Termites cause billions in damage silently. Don't wait until it's too late — look for these 5 subtle signs of termite activity in your Phoenix home.

Arizona's Silent Destroyers

The Phoenix metro area sits in a "very heavy" termite activity zone. Unfortunately, subterranean termites work silently, eating the wood inside your walls 24/7 without you ever knowing.

By the time most Phoenix homeowners notice termite damage, thousands of dollars in structural harm has already been done. To protect your investment, you need to know what to look for.

1. Mud Tubes on the Foundation

This is the most common sign of subterranean termites in Arizona. Termites need moisture to survive, so they build pencil-sized tubes made of dirt and saliva to travel from the soil to the wood in your home. Look for these tubes along your exterior stem wall, in your garage, or coming down from the ceiling.

2. Discarded Wings (Swarmers)

In the spring or right after monsoon rains, mature termite colonies send out winged "swarmers" to reproduce and start new colonies. After they find a mate, they shed their wings. If you find small, uniform wings piled on your windowsills or near doors, you have an active colony very close by.

3. Hollow-Sounding Wood

Termites eat wood from the inside out, leaving a thin veneer of timber or paint on the outside. If you tap on a baseboard, door frame, or wall stud and it sounds hollow or papery, you likely have termite damage.

4. Bubbling or Peeling Paint

As termites eat the wood directly behind your drywall or paint, they introduce moisture. This can cause the paint to bubble or peel, looking very similar to water damage.

5. Frass (Termite Droppings)

Drywood termites (which are less common but still present in Phoenix) leave behind small, wood-colored droppings called frass. It often looks like a tiny pile of sawdust or coarse sand near a window sill or door frame.

What to Do If You See These Signs

Do not spray the termites with bug spray or break open the mud tubes! This will simply cause the termites to retreat and find a new way into your walls, making them harder to treat.

Instead, contact Ultimate Pest immediately for a free termite inspection. We'll assess the damage and provide a targeted treatment plan to eliminate the colony.
